We’re always looking for power whether we know it or not. It is something that we need in order to thrive. Without it, we cannot make change, we feel hopeless and unable to make a difference in the world. A life without power is a sad one.
According to Google, “Power” is defined as ‘the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. “the idea that men should have power over women”‘
That means that unless we direct or influence those in our lives, we’re completely powerless.
No-Self
In Buddhism one of the ‘Three Characteristics’ is No-Self (the other two are impermanence and suffering which are closely associated with this). This refers to the illusion of reality having a permanent and separate self.
There is this notion that there is a permanent “I” or “me,” which is a separate entity that can be found. The obvious assumption of we are our body sounds good until we look at it and say “this is my body,” which implies at that moment that whatever owns the body wasn’t the body.
Happiness. It’s the term thrown around more often than any other term when people are asked what they are looking for in life. A loving partner, a fun high-paying job and endless world travel are also amongst some of the most common answers, however all of these are preference-based means to the one ultimate end, which is happiness.
Emotion is what makes man feel alive. His ability to feel deeply, to have empathy and compassion, and to be sensitive to both internal and external factors by exercising present moment awareness frequently are the actions that enable him to execute his passions in a manner filled with truth so deep that it possesses the power to connect him with others and with the universe as a whole. Without feeling, he is merely existing, not living.
Have you ever felt the inextricable sense of dread hanging over you like a black cloud that just won’t budge? Or do you wake in the middle of the night anxious and distraught for reasons unknown?
In the past few years I have read a lot of articles regarding the over-priced post-secondary education system and the disappointment of many who come out of the system with a degree that does not offer them any sense of job security.
Your boxed education level is not an indication of whether or not you have the ability to access your inner genius. Each of us is a single spark containing the entire blueprint of the infinite Universe.
“Everyone has been made for some particular work, and the desire for that work has been put in every heart.” ~ Rumi
You now stand in front of a door.
“There is no one map for how to live our lives. Reality is just a word and you’re not supposed to use it without quotation marks around it anyways.” – Jason Silva, quoting Joseph Campbell
We live in a world where conformity is both publicly practiced and accepted to a much higher degree than creativity. A life of conformity is seen as the safe route, the route where we stay out of trouble and are more likely to build a stable and secure life that we can be proud of.
So I’ve been thinking…
We toss around classical phrases on a daily basis. Usually, when a common phrase is thrown in my face I mentally pause to wonder where the saying originated. Well, after it’s stuck in my head, I’m quiet for a good chunk of time because I’d caught a train of thought headed toward a reasonable theory regarding the origin of said phrase.
