From Dreams Obscure
Often, dreamers don’t pay attention to the colors in their dreams.
However, focusing more attention on this aspect of dreams may help
lead to a more accurate and fulfilling interpretation. For example: A
dreamer dreams of a statue, which falls from its place on a mantle
and crashes to the floor. Seems pretty broad, huh? However, if the
dreamer recalled that the statue was green, then one possible
interpretation could be that the dreamer’s jealousy is leading to
destructive ends. If a certain color continuously reappears in your
dream, it may be time for you to figure out exactly what that color
could represent. Your subconscious is most likely trying to comment
on something by using that particular color as a symbol.
Below is a list of colors and their possible meanings. Please keep in
mind that what one color represents to one person may be completely
different for another; different cultures assign varying symbolism to
particular colors The list below represents a western culture bias.
Red: Lighter shades of red can be representative of excitement
(especially sexually), passion, energy, and life. However, deeper
or “weighed down” shades of red may be indicative of anger and
vengence. Notice how the stop sign is red; possibly a hint from your
subconscious to cease and desist in a certain activity? Other
possible meanings, depending on the dream’s context, are:
matters of the heart, blood, something that is important and should
be understood, and danger.
Questions to ask yourself if red appears in your dream: Have you been
allowing your anger to get out of control? Is there something that
your dream may be trying to get you to pay more attention to? Do you
feel as if you are sexually balanced?
Orange: Orange is considered to be a color of warmth, thoughtfulness,
wisdom and sociability. Muddier shades of orange may be
representative of pride or vanity, while golden orange denotes self-
control.
Questions to ask yourself if orange appears in your dream: Could your
dream be telling you to be more thoughtful about a particular person
or situation?
Yellow: A bright yellow color represents “sunniness,” joy, optimism,
and intuition and mental stimulation. Muddier shades of yellow may
mean blocked intuition, betrayal, treachery, and faithlessness. This
color may be used by your subconscious to help ease you out of
depression.
Questions to ask yourself if yellow appears in your dream: Have you
been depressed lately? If so, your dream may be encouraging you to
cheer up. Are you being two-faced in relation to a family member,
friend, lover, or other situation? Is this color appearing in your
dreams constantly in association with a certain symbol? If so, then
maybe you will find joy in association with that symbol if you allow
yourself to.
Green: This is the color of nature. It is also the color of
development and growth. Lighter shades of green tending towards blue
represent healing. Darker, muddier shades of greens represent envy
and greed, as well as a stubborn and/or self-opinionated attitude.
This color is also representative of money.
Questions to ask yourself if green appears in your dream: Is there an
area in your life in which you are experiencing new growth? If darker
shades of this color appear in relation to a certain person, is it
because you are jealous or envious of them or something of theirs?
Blue: Blue is a cool, calming color, often used for relaxation and
meditation. It is a very spiritual color, and is representative of
truth, intellect, and justice. Muddy shades of blue may denote
depression or moodiness. When this color appears in your dreams, it
is probably a message from your subconscious telling you to relax and
take things more slowly.
Questions to ask yourself if blue appears in your dream: Is there
something in your life that is causing you to be overly nervous and
anxious? Have you been depressed lately? Are you coming upon new
spiritual awareness in your life?
Violet: Darker shades of violet may denote a person who feels
misunderstood or has obstacles to overcome. It too is a spiritual
color, and brighter shades help inspire and stimulate, especially in
relation to dream activity.
Questions to ask yourself if violet appears in your dream: Have you
been feeling as if you cannot relate to anyone? Could your dream
possibly be trying to give you added inspiration in regards to a new
project?
Black: Because this color is often regarded as the color of death,
its appearance in our dreams may represent the death of old ideas or
change. Another possible explanation is that it represents a hidden
or rejected aspect of the dreamer. It is the color of mystery, the
unconscious, and sometimes even protection.
Questions to ask yourself if black appears in your dream: As stated
above, black often deals with the death of new ideas. Could this be
your dream telling you to prepare for the transition? Is this pointed
out an undeveloped or negtive aspect of yourself? Have you been
emotionally or physically hurt lately?
If so, this color may appear in the dream as a sign of self-
protection.
White: White is often regarded as the color of purity and truth.
Seeing this in your dreams may be a message from your subconscious
telling you to regard the truth of a certain situation. It is also
the color of completeness and innocence.
Questions to ask yourself if white appears in your dream: Is your
dream encouraging you to see the truth? Could your dream be hinting
at a fresh start in some aspect of your life?
