From 2000 to 2015, half a million people died from prescription drug overdoses. Stories continue to roll in daily about the lives claimed by prescription and non-prescription drug overdoses. Cannabis is not only excluded from the overdose drug list, but it reduces the use of dangerous prescription drugs. Raw cannabis is considered by many experts as a dietary essential. As a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, some classify it as one of the most important plants on earth. The biggest benefits from the plant may come not by smoking it, but rather by consuming it in its raw and natural form. “If cannabis were discovered in an Amazon rainforests today, people would be clambering to make as much use as they could out of the potential […] Read More

Marijuana has gone mainstream, as evidenced by the spread of the use of marijuana as a medicine, and now outright legalization in some places is turning peoples’ heads and hearts to a vision where marijuana is perceived as good. Now available in print, I am very happy to announce the New York publication of my book Healing with Medical Marijuana, now available on Amazon. In it one can find total support for the use of marijuana—even for rest and relaxation. Researchers are still struggling to understand how it impacts the body but anyone can use marijuana and see for themselves how it affects their pain and disease conditions. In a new 400-page analysis of the current state of scientific knowledge on the health risks and […] Read More
More than a dozen U.S. states have now completely decriminalized the act of possessing marijuana and both Colorado and Washington have made it legal to possess, sell, transport and cultivate the plant. In a historic and significant moment in American history, last November, Colorado became the first US state to legalize marijuana for recreational use. The impact of the decision could soon ripple across the entire country with vast opportunities to educate millions on the top health benefits of marijuana. by Marco Torres, PreventDisease With the passage of I-502 in the 2012 Washington State election, marijuana also became legal in Washington–not just for medical use, but also for recreational use–and Alaska, California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Vermont have […] Read More
In a strange and subtle turn of events, the Obama administration came to the defense of legal marijuana by telling the U.S. Supreme Court that they should not even entertain a lawsuit raised by Oklahoma and Nebraska Both state’s politicians seem to have strong hatred for nearby Colorado’s recreational marijuana trade. As such, they have tried to actually sue to bring an end to the legalized plant in Colorado. U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr., wrote a brief suggesting that the U.S. Supreme Court is not the proper venue for such a grievance. “The motion for leave to file a bill of complaint should be denied because this is not an appropriate case for the exercise of this Court’s original jurisdiction,” Verrilli penned. “Entertaining the type of dispute at issue here […] Read More
Colbert Calls Out Ohio Gov. Kasich: You’re ‘Ruining People’s Lives’ by Locking Them Up For Marijuana
Stephen Colbert recently took on Ohio Governor and GOP presidential candidate John Kasich, over the Ohio marijuana legalization debate. The recent initiative to legalize marijuana in Ohio ultimately failed, after a group of corporate investors tried to amend the state constitution to prohibit entrepreneurs from getting in on the pot trade. The bulk of Ohio voters do, however, support marijuana legalizations, but not if it is tied to a corporate get-rich-quick scheme. “I know this is a dirty word when you’re running in the Republican primary, but you seem reasonable,” Colbert said on The Late Show. “We have a huge drug crisis in this country,” Kasich said. “Is it really pot, the drug crisis?” Colbert stopped him, adding that, “lots of people are going to jail for minor […] Read More
New research finds pot is the least deadly among recreational drugs by far. A new report, by the journal Scientific Reports, finds that marijuana is far safer than other recreational drugs, including and especially alcohol. Pot may be as much as 114 times safer than booze, say the researchers. The study also maintains that past research into alcohol has systematically underestimated the risks associated with its use. The study sought to quantify the risk of death associated with the use of common recreational drugs. Alcohol, they found, was the deadliest substance, followed by heroin and cocaine. The safest drug was marijuana; it was also the only drug in the study that had a low mortality risk for users. Unlike other studies into drug toxicity, the […] Read More
Marijuana use among teens in Colorado has declined by at least 2% in the past 2 years. According to the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey released by the Department of Public Health and Environment, Marijuana use among teens in Colorado has been declining over the past two years. According to the statistics, habitual marijuana use fell from 22 percent in 2011 to 20 percent in 2013, and lifetime use declined from 39 percent to 37 during the same time period. Additionally, there has been a 5 percent drop in teen use since the medical marijuana dispensaries entered the state 3 years ago. California has the oldest, most established cannabis industry in the US, so what gives? The following article first appeared in Cannabis Now: California boasts the world’s eighth largest economy, larger than even Russia. San Francisco Weekly’s Chris Roberts recently estimated the demand for legalized marijuana in California to be $2.1 billion. The estimate, initially reported at $2.1 trillion, was based on the numbers coming out of Colorado scaled to fit the Golden State. California supplies the nation with food, wine, technology and entertainment, and its politics have controlled it thusly. This year alone billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper has financed a ballot initiative that would split the state into six smaller states, creating the wealthiest state in the nation — Silicon Valley. Californians have even elected two entertainers to the […] Read More
Workplace drug testing is unjust and ruins lives. The following article first appeared on Substance.com: Unless you’ve been in hiding, you’ll know that the New York Times made history last Sunday, July 27, when it launched a series of editorials calling for an end to marijuana prohibition. The first piece, “Repeal Prohibition, Again,” was a complete reversal of the Grey Lady’s hitherto cautious—some would say conservative—position on the drug war: “It took 13 years for the United States to come to its senses and end Prohibition, 13 years in which people kept drinking, otherwise law-abiding citizens became criminals and crime syndicates arose and flourished. It has been more than 40 years since Congress passed the current ban on marijuana, inflicting great harm on society just to prohibit […] Read More
A new national report dispels the common prohibitionist argument. The U.S. federal government stubbornly continues to classify marijuana as a Schedule I substance with no known medical uses. While our government blocks all research on the potential benefits of marijuana, clinical studies in Israel, Spain and elsewhere confirm what patients in the 23 U.S. states with medical marijuana programs already know: it’s a miraculous treatment option for many known diseases, with the potential to mitigate, and sometimes reverse, ailments ranging from cancer, PTSD and epilepsy to arthritis, skin abrasions, and chronic pain. Since so many of the arguments against cannabis medicine are crumbling, marijuana prohibitionists are resorting to fear-mongering about the “safety of the children” to defend their position. They insist that allowing marijuana in any form will give kids […] Read More
