Editor: Joseph Trainor NEW INFORMATION IN THE 1948 MANTELL CASE Last week’s “Sightings” had an interview with former Army sergeant Quinton A. Blackwell, who was in the tower at Godman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky the afternoon of January 7, 1948, when Captain Thomas F. Mantell had his fatal encounter with a UFO. During his meeting with Capt. Mantell’s two sons and sister, Blackwell made a startling statement. He said that once Capt. Mantell had the large metallic saucer in sight, the pilot remarked, “We’re going to need hot guns.” “Hot guns” is Air Force slang for aircraft weaponry loaded with live ammunition. The five F-51 Mustang fighter planes were on a routine ferry flight from Georgia to Godman Field that day and were not […] Read More

Editor: Joseph Trainor Yeah, I know this was supposed to go out last night. Unfortunately, my carrier wouldn’t let me onto AOL. No April Fool in this issue, gang. Just the straight skinny on last week’s UFOs. Enjoy. FREAKY FIREBALL STARTLES CALIFORNIANS At 10:40 p.m. Pacific time, on March 16, 1996, a father and daughter were standing on a hilltop near Midpines, California, 60 miles north of Fresno. They were using a pair of binoculars to scan the sky for Comet Hyakutake. All at once, they spotted a bizarre fireball passing south of Pinoche Peak. The object, which they first took for a meteor, blazed across the sky, now and then flaring brightly. Then, according to the father, “the sucker dived and flew directly […] Read More

The sky was clear, and the temperature a comfortable 50 degrees Fahrenheit, as the Huntsville woman and her six-year-old daughter arrived at their observation sight. Looking into the sky directly overhead, they spied “a fuzzy white light…like the Comet Hyakutake” descending in an arc toward the horizon and moving very rapidly. The UFO halted its plunge just above the treeline, and the woman kept it in view for 15 minutes with her telescope. At first she thought it was a meteor, but the UFO “did not decrease in its intensity” and was […] Read More

As the first astronomer peered through the telescope’s eyepiece, he saw “a bright flash near Venus.” She said, “At first I thought it was some sort of meteor exploding in the upper atmosphere.” Another member of the group, who’d set up their telescope on Brandon Avenue near Route 23, said the sky explosion was “a whitish green color.” The first astronomer looked again and saw a gray saucer with “two […] Read More
