1987: An Open Letter to the UFO Community

by Gary Kinder, author of Light Years March 6, 1987 I have received so many phone calls and letters (and copies of letters sent to others) about the forthcoming LIGHT YEARS, it seems appropriate for me to write a letter of explanation. Had I not been involved with the arrival of a new daughter two weeks ago, I would have written this letter much sooner. I know that many of you were confused to hear I was writing a book on Meier; I also know that most of you will understand when I offer a proper explanation. Here it is. Though no one in the UFO community has seen the manuscript for LIGHT YEARS, much of the vehemence over its publication seems to arise […] Read More

1992: EARTH LIGHTS AND THE RE-INVENTION OF UFOLOGY.

Mainstream ufology needs to re-invent itself. The concepts, beliefs and fundamental assumptions that have driven it over its first half-century of existence are due for a major overhaul. Mainstream ufology espousing one or another form of the Extra-Terrestrial Hypothesis or ETH would be wise to acknowledge its cultural and historical roots as a bit of Forties and Fifties Americana. This is currently being extended beyond its shelf-life.  One potential re-invention is “earth lights” research: the study of glowing, polymorphous forms by night either stationary or aerobatic, ranging from inches to several yards across – and shiny metallic or pitch-black forms by day. (The term “earth lights” is simply a nickname to distinguish the phenomena from ideas of ET craft.) To the […] Read More

1993: ZEN. . . AND THE ART OF DEBUNKERY

by by Daniel Drasin (C) 1993 All rights reserved. May not be reproduced commercially without permission. May be posted electronically provided that it is reproduced unaltered and in its entirety, and made available without charge. So you’ve had a close encounter with a UFO or its occupants. Or a serious interest in the subject of extramundane life. Or a passion for following clues that seem to point toward the existence of a greater reality. Mention any of these things to most working scientists and be prepared for anything from patronizing skepticism to merciless ridicule. After all, science is supposed to be a purely hardnosed enterprise with little patience for “expanded” notions of reality. Right? Wrong. Like all systems of truth-seeking, science, properly conducted, has […] Read More

1995: A Short Introduction to Ufology

Dennis Stacy, Editor, MUFON UFO Journal original source The acronym UFO – for Unidentified Flying Object – is so prevalent and commonplace today, that it’s easy to forget the term is not even fully fifty years old yet. There is even some dispute about the acronym’s exact origin. In his classic account of his years spent as the director of Project Blue Book – the Air Force’s official UFO “investigation” agency – Capt. Edward J. Ruppelt says unequivocally that “UFO is the official term that I created to replace the words ‘flying saucers’” (Report on Unidentified Flying Objects, Doubleday, 1956, p. 6). Presumably, this would have been sometime between 1951, when Ruppelt took over Project Grudge, later renamed Blue Book, and September of 1953, […] Read More

1999: UFOLOGY vs. REALITY

What is UFOLOGY? Most would describe it as the study of UFOs. I do. Recently, however, it has become so ever-increasingly clear that many see it as a hobby or a pastime. Some, even as a game. As I reflect on some recent events, I am left wondering just how we have made it this far. Additionally, with some recent hard-hitting blows, I am also wondering how long it will take to return to at least the place we were only 3 short months ago. While UFOLOGY itself is growing exponentially, the seriousness and effectiveness are being knocked down fast. I think faster than the growth, and that does bother me. One other thing that is rapidly gaining on UFOLOGY is the size of […] Read More

1999: UFOs: WHAT YOU’RE NOT TOLD

Hugh F. Cochrane While most UFOs are known to be light emitting or light-absorbing objects seen moving about the sky no satisfactory explanation has ever emerged to explain them. They have been labeled hoaxes, imagination and misinterpretation which in some cases has been proven true. But there are those that defy any rational explanation and after fifty years of diligent investigation, the enigma remains unresolved. Those in the UFO community blame government cover-ups for this lack of progress and include the media for following the government line. But the public has long ago lost interest in reports of fleeting UFO events which rarely last long enough to be properly investigated. When investigators do arrive and are equipped to gather samples of affected materials for […] Read More

2000: Y3K? Space aliens and androids

A national poll finds that Americans believe in a fantastic future filled with technological, medical and space-age advances. By Thomas Hargrove and Joseph Bernt / Scripps Howard News Service Most Americans believe that the next 1,000 years will be filled with discoveries and glittering technology that would dumbfound Jules Verne. We expect the future to be filled with friendly space aliens, unborn children nurtured inside mechanical wombs and medical cures for ancient scourges such as cancer and even the common cold. Despite the promise of human advancements, we overwhelmingly believe that God will still be worshiped, that Christianity will remain the dominant religion and that professional athletics will still be cheered come the year 3000, according to a nationwide survey of 1,015 adults conducted […] Read More

2001: The Irrelevance of UFO Secrecy

Michael Mannion, Mindshift 2001 Do you want to know the truth about the UFO-ET phenomenon? Avoid those who claim to have access to secrets. The truth is not hidden; it is right before your eyes. Let the keepers of the UFO and ET secrets keep them. Leave them to themselves in their world of self-spun mystery. The facts about the new cosmic reality are in the open, plain for all with eyes to see. Why don’t we ignore their little game and move on to more productive pursuits? The secrets kept by the deceptive figures in the military, the intelligence community and departments of civilian government are the secrets of the past. The truth is to be found in full, living contact with the […] Read More

2005: What’s This? A Shaver Revival?

by Doug Skinner Richard Sharpe Shaver died 30 years ago. He was never famous in the usual sense of the word, but the “Shaver Mystery” and the “rock books” were once hot topics in certain circles. That was a long time ago, however, and Shaver ought to be forgotten by now. Surprisingly, he has remained stubbornly alive, and in an unexpected place—the art world. Maybe it’s time to reassess him; maybe we can even clear up a few puzzles and misconceptions. Shaver’s Early Life Richard Shaver (he added the “Sharpe” himself later) was born in 1907; he was one of five children. At least two other members of his family were writers: his mother, Grace, was a published poet, and his brother Taylor contributed […] Read More

2007: Fallen Angels and UFOs A Maze of Misconception

by Patrick Cooke Posted: 15:05 April 30, 2007 One of the more prominent topics in the “alien agenda” debate is a common connection to the “fallen angels“, the Nephilim, of the Bible. This concept has become so entrenched in the common belief that few ever ask who these fallen ones are. With very little research, this entire concept collapses under the weight of simple truth found in scripture. There are angels that “fell” or, were actually forced from “heaven” in the Bible, but they were not the angels of Noah’s Flood; and they didn’t fall from the kind of heaven most believe they did. Who are the Nephilim? It is not easy to find the origins of the commonly accepted belief about who the […] Read More

2007: Saucer Full of Secrets

Inside The Mysterious Valley By Christopher O’Brien In The Mysterious Valley, Colorado investigator Christopher O’Brien introduced tens of thousands to one of America’s most anomalous regions and began revealing the documented history of high-strange events in the San Luis Valley, Colorado-New Mexico. Along with the celebrated history of this magical Rocky Mountain region, his time-line account of his personal investigation into unidentified flying objects (UFOs), animal mutilations (UADs), abductions, and a wide variety of paranormal phenomena proved something very strange is said to occur at America’s rooftop. Saucer Full of Secrets: Inside The Mysterious Valley picks up where The Mysterious Valley left off. The area’s unexplained UFO activity reaches a fever pitch, and we continue to follow O’Brien as he investigates even more incredible […] Read More

2013: Establishment Harassment of UFO Watchers

One of my particular dislikes is when film or photos were taken of U. f. O’s are confiscated and destroyed by the authorities, Some years ago, many U.F.O enthusiasts and curious onlookers would gather in the Warminster area of Britain, where sightings had been reported. You gradually get to know people by sight and some you get to know very well through sharing stories and opinions of what the U.F.O phenomena actually is. I always watch for anyone behaving out of the ordinary, and one particular guy would stand away and never mix, and I once followed him when he left a scene of several reported sightings. I was perturbed that he had parked his car about half a mile away, and while walking […] Read More

The Confusing World of UFOlogy

By Jay Barrymore Some have commented about the amount of bickering that occurs between those of the various religious factions, but nothing can compare to the amount of treachery, back-stabbing, and rumor-mongering that occurs among those who consider themselves UFO researchers. Part of the reason for this is that UFOlogy is becoming a New Age religion in its own right. It is developing its own mythology and dogma, with die-hard believers of various organizations committed to UFO research which can be likened to “sects” or denominations. No religion wouldn’t be complete without its own soothsayers, of which there are many types as well, from those who channel alien entities from other galaxies to UFO spokespeople who claim to have government informants with the impending […] Read More

UFO Basics, "A – Z"

Adamski, George – George, who ran a café near the Mount Palomar Observatory, was the most famous of the contactees of the early fifties. In his book Flying Saucers Have Landed, he claimed to have met aliens from Venus. This was before scientists learned that Venus has a surface temperature of around 900 degrees. He later claimed to have been taken on board a flying saucer for a tour of the solar system. AFOSI – The Air Force Office of Special Investigations. A sort of Air Force version of the FBI. It is said to have been involved in UFO investigations many times. Airships or The Great Airship – In 1896 & 1897, there was a wave of sightings across the United States of […] Read More
